Knightmare: A DevOps Cautionary Tale – Doug Seven

On Sunday, both the United States and the United Kingdom condemned the postponement of the elections, with the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), the Arewa Consultative Forum, Academic Staff Union of Universities and others also criticising the move. According to the Chief Executive Officer, Enterprise Stockbrokers, Mr. RotimiFakayejo, apart from the uncertainty caused by the postponement in itself, the disappointment expressed by the US, UK and others sent a negative signal to investors in the capital market. Asked if the postponement impacted the market, he said, I think it is more like it because the extent to which we saw the market dip today (Monday) was quite alarming; we were expecting a drop below one per cent. However, we saw even the major stocks losing steam; those in the consumer goods sector like Nestle and Nigerian Breweries. We saw that extending to Dangote Cement and the banking sector. So, it was really alarming. A review of the performance of the stocks showed that the Banking Index was the worst hit, shedding 5.06 per cent. It was followed by the NSE Consumer Goods Index and the NSE 30 Index, which were down by 3.85 per cent and 2.38 per cent, respectively. http://www.punchng.com/business/business-economy/equities-value-dips-by-n209bn-on-election-delay/

Knights Electronic Trading Group (ETG) managed an average daily trading volume of more than 3.3 billion trades daily, trading over 21 billion dollarsdaily. Thats no joke! On July 31, 2012 Knight had approximately $365 million in cash and equivalents. The NYSE was planning to launch a new Retail Liquidity Program (a program meant to provide improved pricing to retail investors through retail brokers, like Knight) on August 1, 2012. In preparation for this event Knight updated their automated, high-speed, algorithmic router that send orders into the market for execution known as SMARS. One of the core functions of SMARS is to receive orders from other components of Knights trading platform (parent orders) and then send one or more child orders out for execution. In other words, SMARS would receive large orders from the trading platform and break them up into multiple smaller orders in order to find a buyer/seller match for the volume of shares. The larger the parent order, the more child orders would be generated. The update to SMARS was intended to replace old, unused code referred to as Power Peg functionality that Knight hadnt used in 8-years (why code that had been dead for 8-years was still present in the code base is a mystery, but thats not the point). The code that http://www.fxpips.com/gold-losing-new-year-luster-ahead-fridays-nfp/ that was updated repurposed an old flag that was used to activate the Power Peg functionality. The code was thoroughly tested and proven to work correctly and reliably. http://dougseven.com/2014/04/17/knightmare-a-devops-cautionary-tale/
